Antique
A generally accepted definition of an antique violin would be at least 100 years. Since the age and some additional value due to other factors such as condition, rarity and quality, it makes this musical instrument desirable. Certain antique violins made by master luthiers such as Antonio Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù, may be worth millions of dollars. The name "Stradivarius" has become a superlative often associated with excellence; to be called "the Stradivari" of any field is to be deemed the finest there is.
While any violin older than 100 years may be regarded as an antique, the most desirable antique violins come from the period 1600 to 1750, which is regarded as the golden age of violin making, when those violin makers, especially those made by Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù, regarded as the greatest masters of the art made their violins.
